What makes our cities worth living? The Ingolstadt State Garden Show answers this question with sustainable garden concepts.
Sustainable gardens are a focus of the upcoming spoga+gafa. To kick off a series of sustainable garden concepts, let's take a look at this year's State Garden Show in Ingolstadt, Bavaria. The densely populated and industrial north-west of the city has been designed as a new local recreation area for this purpose since July 2017.
A landscape park for upgrading the cityscape
What does the city look like that we want to live in? That was the starting question of the State Garden Show Ingolstadt 2020. In response, the Bavarian metropolis has developed a sustainable green concept for all generations. The new landscape park is intended to enhance and shape the cityscape in the long term. A particular focus is on conserving resources and preserving biodiversity.

Cooperation with universities
In the new landscape park, sustainability is thought of both ecologically and socially. The aim is to make the green areas usable and family-friendly. For this, the State Garden Show cooperates with the Institute for Applied Sustainability. The establishment of the Ingolstadt University of Technology participates in the project “People on the Move”. The joint project with the Catholic University of Eichstätt addresses the topics of innovative mobility, digital transformation and sustainable development.
Theme gardens with sustainable design
The central part of the State Garden Show is themed gardens, which are distributed on the site under the motto "Nature inspiration". The total of nine show gardens present options for environmentally friendly and resource-saving garden design. Landscape architects, landscape gardeners and horticultural companies realize different priorities. By combining different elements, they set creative, modern or classic accents.

Insect-friendly plants and herbs for self-sufficiency
Regional and partially recycled materials are used to build the sustainable themed gardens. Planting close to nature with perennials and shrubs provides food for insects. In addition, parts of the exhibition area are used as orchards, vegetables and herbs for self-sufficiency. Plants that adapt to climate change and high temperatures are also used. Paths and seats are designed to be barrier-free. Swimming ponds, saunas and lounge areas offer suggestions for the design of the home garden.
Garden ideas for home
The theme gardens are realized by companies from the region. This allows visitors to implement ideas from the State Garden Show at home with local companies. "I would be delighted if many Ingolstadt residents were inspired by the theme gardens and opted for an animal-friendly and sustainable garden," said Mayor Dr. Christian Lösel.

Diverse event program
The State Garden Show also wants to sensitize visitors to the topic of sustainability with a diverse program of events. Among other things, 14 flower shows by florists, gardeners and artists are planned. Permanent gardens from partner cities like Moscow present traditional and innovative garden art. There is a large water playground, a play hill and other attractions for children. Various live acts covering the entire course of the State Garden Show round off the extensive program.
The previously planned date of the State Garden Show Ingolstadt 2020 is from April 24th to October 4th. Due to the corona pandemic, no statement can currently be made about the opening of the event.
